On a recent flight from San Diego to Dulles, passengers aboard Alaska Airlines Flight #322 were treated to a spectacular view of the total solar eclipse—a rare celestial event not set to reoccur in the U.S. until 2044. Equipped with eclipse glasses, travelers had the unique opportunity to witness the eclipse from an unparalleled vantage point high above the clouds.

The memorable experience was the result of meticulous planning and teamwork by Alaska Airlines' staff. Scott Bunch, the first officer of Flight #322, highlighted the journey as one of his top flying experiences, crediting the excellent route planning that aligned the aircraft perfectly with the eclipse's path of totality. This precise alignment allowed passengers to not only witness the eclipse but to remain within the dark shadow as the moon obscured the sun, extending the duration of the spectacle.

The airline had seen a surge in bookings for routes likely to offer a view of the eclipse, with flights to Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and Mazatlán selling out well in advance. In response, Alaska Airlines strategically added flights to these locations, anticipating the high demand and ensuring more travelers could enjoy the eclipse from an ideal spot.

The decision to align Flight #322's route with the eclipse path began with Joe Demory, Alaska Airlines' director of dispatch. He leveraged the existing flight schedule against the eclipse’s trajectory to select optimal routes. Despite potential disruptions like weather and air traffic control limitations, the dispatch team, including veteran chief dispatchers Ed Fischer and Eric Juchartz, executed a flawless plan. They utilized various technologies and software, including Google Earth with an eclipse overlay, to chart the most effective course for the eclipse viewing.

On the day of the eclipse, the dispatch team’s efforts paid off spectacularly. The aircraft intercepted the full eclipse over Missouri, close to the Illinois border. Thanks to coordination with air traffic control, the flight was allowed to perform maneuvers that ensured passengers on both sides of the plane could view the eclipse, adding to the thrill of the experience.

This event not only provided passengers with a once-in-a-lifetime experience but also showcased the high level of expertise and professionalism within Alaska Airlines' team. It exemplified how behind-the-scenes efforts in aviation can transform a routine flight into an extraordinary journey, enhancing the travel experience by merging scientific marvels with skilled aviation management.
