This July, the Amalfi Coast, Italy's premier tourist destination, will welcome a significant enhancement to its accessibility with the opening of the Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport. Situated south of Salerno, this new facility aims to provide a more direct route for travelers heading to the picturesque landscapes of the Campania region, bypassing the need to travel through Naples.

Direct Flights to Amalfi's Heart

The Salerno-Amalfi Coast airport's launch has been eagerly anticipated by both locals and the international community. "The opening...will be an opportunity for the development of lesser-known areas," says Marco Ferrara, chief executive of Salerno Incoming Tour and Stay. This development could shift the tourist influx from Naples-centric areas to the southern parts of the coast, potentially redistributing the economic benefits more evenly.

A Phased Launch with Expanding Routes

Starting July 11, Volotea will commence limited services from Nantes, France, and Cagliari, Sardinia, with subsequent routes from Catania and Verona beginning September 2. EasyJet follows suit with routes from Milan, Berlin, Geneva, Basel, and London Gatwick, marking a new chapter in the region's connectivity. With fares starting as low as $34, the move is set to make the Amalfi Coast more accessible to budget travelers.

A Boost for Local Tourism

The new airport is not just about enhancing accessibility but also about enriching the tourist experience. By reducing travel time and providing an alternative entry point, the Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport could alleviate some pressure from Naples' airport and roads, promising a smoother start to the holiday for many. With an estimated initial service to 200,000 passengers, expectations are high for the airport's impact on the region's tourism dynamics.

Sustainable Growth and Historical Significance

The Salerno airport's rich history, dating back to its founding in 1926 and its role during World War II, adds a layer of cultural depth to its modern-day purpose. As it undergoes expansion to accommodate future growth — with plans for a new passenger terminal and runway extension — the project balances between enhancing tourist convenience and preserving the region's heritage.

The inauguration of the Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport marks a pivotal shift in how visitors will experience one of Italy's most famed coastlines. By offering a more direct and efficient route, the new airport not only promises to enhance the travel experience but also contributes to the sustainable development of the Amalfi Coast's lesser-known gems.
