The loss of a loved one is a difficult time, often requiring urgent travel arrangements, especially if the funeral occurs soon after the death. Last-minute flights can be very expensive during such moments.

However, some airlines offer special fares for passengers who need to travel urgently due to the death of a close relative. These fares help reduce financial burdens and provide flexibility in booking and changing flights.

Policies for bereavement discounts vary from one airline to another. Typically, passengers need to provide proof of the tragic situation, such as a death certificate, a hospital statement, or contact information for the funeral home.

Alaska Airlines offers a 10% discount on the lowest available fare for all its destinations, provided travel occurs within seven days after the death of a close relative. The discount also applies to flights operated by Horizon or SkyWest on behalf of Alaska Airlines.

This discount is available to customers who have lost a spouse or partner, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew. It also includes stepfamily members and in-laws. Unfortunately, this discount cannot be combined with other offers, including miles and other discount programs.

Air Canada also offers discounted fares for economy-class tickets for passengers traveling due to the loss of a close relative. The trip must begin within 10 days of booking, and the return flight can be within 60 days, which can be helpful if you need to handle estate matters.

To qualify for this discount, the deceased must be a spouse (or former spouse), child, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, sibling, or legal guardian. This also includes step, half, and in-law versions of these relationships. Passengers must provide proof of death, such as a copy of the death certificate, a statement from the funeral director or coroner, or a letter from the treating physician on official letterhead.

These measures offered by airlines help ease the travel process during difficult times and minimize financial stress. Although not all airlines offer such fares, it is advisable to contact the carrier’s customer service for up-to-date information and possible discounts.
