Alaska Airlines Introduces New Sustainable Aviation Fuel Option for Passengers
In a pioneering move for the U.S. aviation industry, Alaska Airlines has introduced an innovative program that allows passengers to purchase Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) credits to offset carbon emissions associated with their flights. This initiative not only supports environmental sustainability but also offers travelers the unique opportunity to earn elite status faster through the airline's loyalty program.
Starting immediately, when booking flights through Alaska Airlines' website, passengers can choose to offset 5%, 10%, or 20% of their trip's carbon emissions by purchasing SAF credits. This feature is expected to be available on the airline's mobile app shortly. The new program is designed to support the airline's goal of reducing lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% with the use of SAF.
Moreover, Alaska Airlines is incentivizing its Mileage Plan™ members by granting them elite-qualifying miles (EQMs) for their SAF credit purchases. For every $100 spent on SAF, passengers can earn 500 EQMs, up to a maximum of 5,000 EQMs per year.
Diana Birkett Rakow, Alaska Airlines' senior vice president of public affairs and sustainability, stated, "The introduction of SAF credits represents a significant step towards our ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. We are proud to be the first U.S. airline to integrate sustainability efforts with tangible loyalty benefits for our passengers."
The SAF purchase option is seamlessly integrated into the booking process, providing a straightforward way for passengers to contribute to environmental sustainability. The initiative is supported by CHOOOSE, a climate technology company that ensures the carbon calculations align with international standards.
