Alaska Airlines Offers Free Flights to Maui Fire Victims Ahead of Merger
Alaska Airlines has announced a significant initiative to support families affected by the devastating Maui wildfires in August 2023. In partnership with Hawaii's Governor Josh Green and Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen, Alaska Airlines launched the Maui CARE FLIGHTS program, providing over 3,000 free roundtrip flights for those impacted by the disaster.
The Maui CARE FLIGHTS program, in collaboration with Marriott International and the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA), aims to offer relief and new experiences to affected families. The initiative includes special charter flights to Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, where families will enjoy a three-night stay at a Marriott hotel and a two-day pass to the resort.
The first flights of the program will commence on July 11, 2024, returning to Maui on July 14, 2024. Following these initial flights, Alaska Airlines will donate 180 roundtrip tickets each month, allowing families to travel to any destination within the airline's network without financial burden. This initiative is expected to provide a much-needed break and a chance to reconnect with loved ones.
Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Airlines, emphasized the importance of the program during a press conference, noting that the free flights will offer thousands of individuals the opportunity to visit family or take a vacation, providing relief from their recent hardships. Governor Green also highlighted the collective effort involved in the program, underscoring the healing power of new experiences.
In response to the wildfires, Alaska Airlines had previously launched rescue flights from Seattle Tacoma International Airport, delivering essential supplies and evacuating guests from Maui. By August 10, 2023, the airline had transported over 200,000 pounds of relief supplies to assist the affected community.
This charitable initiative comes as Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines await regulatory approval for their merger, announced in December 2023. The merger, which aims to enhance connectivity in Hawaii, has already received approval from shareholders of both airlines and is pending review by the Department of Justice's Antitrust Division. The final decision is expected by August 5, 2024.
As Alaska Airlines continues to support the Maui community, the merger with Hawaiian Airlines promises to strengthen their combined efforts in ensuring reliable and efficient travel for all passengers.
