American Airlines Offers to Sell ConciergeKey Status to Expiring AAirpass Members
American Airlines has initiated offers to sell its exclusive ConciergeKey status to former AAirpass customers whose memberships are expiring. This move comes as the airline tries to win back business from travel agencies and corporate accounts, a segment they previously moved away from.
The initial offers are being made to AAirpass ConciergeKey members with expirations through the end of June 2024. American Airlines customer service is contacting these members, providing terms and conditions via email, and allowing them until the end of July 2024 to decide.
This effort is part of a broader strategy to re-engage with business travelers and regain lost market share. In the past, American Airlines eliminated the AAirpass program and laid off much of their sales team, signaling a shift away from business travel. However, the airline is now reversing course, offering promotions such as 10% commissions on premium products to travel agencies to attract more business.
AAirpass was a pre-purchase travel program that offered benefits, including the elusive ConciergeKey status for high spenders. With the end of this program, many customers are now seeing their statuses expire. ConciergeKey, the highest status tier, is reserved for top-spending customers and corporate influencers, offering perks like priority upgrades and access to exclusive lounges.
American Airlines' new approach includes offering ConciergeKey buybacks for substantial fees, ranging from $5,000 to $10,000. This is in line with their existing practice of allowing elite frequent flyers to buy back their status if they fail to requalify. While lifetime AAirpass holders, such as Mark Cuban and Michael Dell, remain unaffected, the airline is seeking new revenue streams amidst changing business strategies.
By selling ConciergeKey status to expiring AAirpass members, American Airlines aims to maintain a connection with its high-value customers and bolster its revenue during a period of strategic realignment.
