Amsterdam invites residents and visitors to a grand New Year’s celebration, with the main events taking place at Museumplein. The centerpiece will be an eco-friendly light and fireworks show, starting at 6:30 PM with the display of the largest countdown clock in the Netherlands. Children can enjoy a fun interactive program, while the main event begins at 10:30 PM with live music, culminating in a spectacular light show at midnight. Professional firework displays will also take place in IJburg, Nelson Mandela Park, near Sloterplas, and in Weesp.

With a ban on personal fireworks, Amsterdam encourages everyone to join these organized celebrations, which are safe, eco-friendly, and foster community spirit. Additionally, everyone is welcome to start the year with a traditional New Year’s swim at IJburg or Sloterplas. For those seeking warmth, local cafes and cultural venues also host cozy New Year's events filled with music and festive cheer.

Visitors are advised to travel on foot or by bike, as on December 31, public transport in the Netherlands will operate on a modified schedule. In Amsterdam, GVB services, including trams, buses, metro lines, and most ferries, will stop running at 8:00 PM, except for ferries between Central Station and Buiksloterweg or NDSM. NS train services will also cease nationwide after 8:00 PM, so travelers are advised to plan their journeys earlier in the day.

Transport will resume on January 1. GVB will start night buses at 1:30 AM, along with metro services on lines 52 and 54. NS will restart regular train operations at 10:00 AM, with night trains running between major cities like Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Utrecht. This year, the night network will include Haarlem, Amsterdam Bijlmer, and Sloterdijk for the first time.

Amsterdam promises an unforgettable New Year’s celebration in 2024, combining vibrant events with a focus on safety and sustainability. From captivating professional light and fireworks displays to cozy gatherings in local cafes, the city offers something exciting for everyone. Whether you choose to join the New Year’s countdown at Museumplein, enjoy the organized fireworks shows, or take part in the traditional New Year’s swim, Amsterdam creates a festive and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors are encouraged to plan their trips in advance, choose eco-friendly transportation, and join the city's events to welcome the new year with joy and a sense of community.
