On June 15th, Austrian Airlines embarked on its inaugural long-haul flight using the state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This maiden voyage, designated as flight OS87 with registration OE-LPL, departed from Vienna at 4:55 p.m. and successfully landed at JFK Airport in New York. Michael Trestl, CCO of Austrian Airlines, remarked, "The Dreamliner lives up to its name, turning dreams into reality. We are excited to offer our passengers a blend of Austrian hospitality and innovative comfort starting from today."
Passengers on this flight experienced the Dreamliner’s spacious and welcoming cabin, designed to accommodate 294 travelers across Business, Premium Economy, and Economy classes. The aircraft's Business Class features lie-flat beds, direct aisle access, and enhanced privacy for a superior travel experience.
The introduction of the OE-LPL marks a pivotal moment for Austrian Airlines in 2024, signaling the start of a major fleet modernization. Over the next four years, ten Boeing 787-9s will replace older models, enhancing the airline’s international competitiveness and growth. CEO Annette Mann emphasized that this expansion is crucial for Austria’s economy and the future of Vienna’s aviation hub.
The arrival of the Dreamliner at Vienna Airport was also celebrated by Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport. He noted the significance of this milestone for the airline and the airport, highlighting the increased capacity and new flight connections to the USA as vital for Vienna’s long-haul service.
Before departure, passengers on the OE-LPL partook in a festive event at Vienna Airport, featuring themed gifts and a photo wall, hosted by key airline executives. This celebration set the tone for an elevated travel experience aboard the new Dreamliner.
