This weekend, travelers planning to use Avanti West Coast services may face significant disruptions due to a strike by the company's catering staff. The rail union RMT has called for industrial action on Friday and Saturday, in response to imposed work rosters that have caused considerable stress and fatigue among the employees.

The strike, which follows failed negotiations, stems from short notice shift changes, job cuts, and enforced overtime that have severely impacted the caterers' ability to plan their personal lives. RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch highlighted the chaotic management at Avanti West Coast, which has led to unpredictable work hours and continuous job reductions for the catering staff.

For travelers, this means potential delays and reduced services on Avanti West Coast trains over the weekend. On-board catering services, which are essential for long-distance journeys, might be unavailable or significantly limited. Passengers are advised to plan ahead, bring their own refreshments, and check for updates from Avanti West Coast before traveling.

The strike comes at a time when Avanti West Coast is already under scrutiny for its service performance. The company has been criticized for high cancellation rates and poor reliability, with the UK government demanding immediate improvements. Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has summoned Avanti West Coast's management to address these issues, as the company has been labeled one of the worst-performing train operators in the country.

In response to the strikes, Avanti West Coast has implemented a significantly reduced timetable, urging customers to travel only if absolutely necessary. The revised schedule includes fewer trains and shorter operational hours, which may result in overcrowded trains and further delays. Travelers affected by the strikes are entitled to claim full refunds or rebook their journeys for alternative dates.

This strike underscores the importance of a reliable and well-managed service for both staff and passengers. As the situation develops, travelers should stay informed and prepared for any changes to their travel plans.
