Brussels Airport Revamp Will Shift Passenger Experience

Brussels Airport has announced the launch of an extensive infrastructure upgrade, scheduled to be completed by 2032. Planned developments cover a terminal enlargement, the creation of an integrated intermodal hub, and improvements across core passenger zones. According to the plan, initial construction will begin at the end of 2025, starting with the relocation of the current drop-off zone to a new site behind the Sheraton hotel.
The future intermodal hub will integrate rail, bus, and tram services, providing direct access to the terminal. It will be built in place of the current summer terrace and covered by a new architectural structure. The need for this development stems from capacity issues during peak travel periods. The bus and train stations will also be modernised to support increased passenger volumes and improve transfer efficiency.
The planned terminal upgrade will modify both departure and arrival areas. Apart from improving mobility access for disabled travelers besides, the departure hall will be more spacious while check in and luggage handling. The arrivals hall will have larger windows and will provide improved public transport connections, a new taxi area and tram stop open.
Outside the terminal, the road leading to the hub will be turned into a green boulevard with space for cyclists and future tram infrastructure. A public park shall be located nearby and a new hotel, with more than 300 rooms close to the shuttle drop off area is going to be developed in response to the high demand for accommodation. An additional office building is also included in the long-term site plan.
Upon completion, the project is intended to resolve key issues for passengers, such as overcrowding, confusing wayfinding, and restricted availability of environmentally friendly transport options. The updated design aims to streamline passenger flow, reduce connection delays, and enhance travel efficiency during peak hours.
