More than 1,000 drivers and engineers at Go North East, operating across Tyneside, Northumberland, and County Durham, are considering strike action due to ongoing tensions with management. Employees report facing an increasingly hostile work environment, with disciplinary actions, threats of dismissal, and punitive measures for raising health and safety concerns. The dispute follows a pay-related conflict in 2023, which many workers believe has led to retaliatory management tactics that have intensified dissatisfaction among staff.

According to union representatives, the company has imposed rigid policies that have resulted in forced resignations and suspensions. Workers who attempted to address safety issues have been disciplined, and some union representatives have been removed from their elected positions. The refusal to engage in meaningful dialogue has fueled frustration, with employees now seriously considering industrial action, a move that could significantly impact public transport in the region.

A Go North East strike will impose significant disruption on bus services and connectivity may be affected, travel times will increase etc, In short for travellers. The cancellations and delays of routes would call upon tourists as well as commuters and residents to re-evaluate their daily life to trek to the important places of use of these services. The bus would be the only thing keeping many areas operating rural-style; with nowhere else to go, passengers would be tossed or very inconvenienced.

The anticipated strike may also create additional strain on alternative modes of transport, such as trains, taxis, and car rentals. Increased demand could lead to price hikes, overcrowding, and longer wait times, making travel within the region more expensive and less efficient. Businesses in the tourism and hospitality sectors may suffer a decline in customers due to accessibility concerns, potentially affecting the local economy if the disruptions persist.

Travelers to the North East are advised to keep track of any potential service changes during this uncertain time and be flexible on their plans. Doing a bit of research on transport updates (live), looking into alternate routes and making sure that your back up travel plans are all sorted can help to minimise any shock caused and make the strike travel experiences a little less painful.
