Celebrate Nature During National Nature Reserves Week in the UK
Worcestershire residents are invited to celebrate National Nature Reserves Week, taking place from May 20-31. This event, organized by Natural England, highlights the benefits of National Nature Reserves (NNRs) and encourages public engagement with nature.
The second annual celebration will feature various activities across the country, including several events at Wyre Forest NNR in Worcestershire, in collaboration with Forestry England. These events include guided walks, family activities, and educational sessions about forest management.
Key events at Wyre Forest NNR include:
- May 20: Dawn Chorus Guided Walk
- May 21: Moth Trapping and Butterfly Walk
- May 23: Woodland Management Walk
- May 25: Family Activity Day
- May 20-26: Family Orienteering Trail
- May 25-26: Meet The Machines Event
This year's theme, "National Nature Reserves for Everyone," focuses on connecting with new and diverse audiences. Over 100 events will take place nationwide, aiming to engage people from various backgrounds in appreciating England’s natural heritage.
Emma Johnson, Area Deputy Director for Natural England in the West Midlands, emphasized the importance of these events, stating that they offer excellent opportunities for people to learn about the significance of NNRs and how to protect them.
National Nature Reserves play a crucial role in preserving England's vital habitats, species, and geological features. They provide significant health and wellbeing benefits by bringing green spaces and wildlife closer to urban populations. The government's Environmental Improvement Plan, which includes the declaration of 25 new NNRs by 2028, underscores the value placed on these natural spaces.
