Countries where you need to pay tourist tax in 2024
More and more popular destinations are introducing tourist taxes to help develop the industry. Venice and Bali have recently introduced tourist tax, and in 2024, several countries will have to pay tourist tax.
In addition, many countries that have long introduced tourist taxes have announced an increase in their level. For example, in Spain, in addition to the regional tourist tax, there is a citywide tax, which last year increased to £2.35, Birmingham Mail reports.
Another increase will take place on April 1, 2024, when the fee will rise to £2.78. The tax applies only to visitors staying in official tourist destinations.
Meanwhile, in Valencia, a tourist tax is being introduced in 2024 for travelers staying in all types of accommodation. It is officially called the Valencian Tourist Stay Tax and visitors will have to pay up to £1.71 per night, depending on where they stay, for seven nights. Cruise ship passengers will pay £1.28 per day.
At the same time, visitors to Olhão, Portugal, are charged £1.71 from April to October. From November to March, the tax is reduced to 86 pence. The tax is aimed at reducing the impact of tourism on the city and improving cleanliness and safety.
In addition, Bali, a popular destination for millions of tourists, has also introduced a fee. Starting February 14, 2024, visitors will have to pay a fee of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah (£7.53). This will have to be paid at special kiosks at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport. Bali authorities said the fee is aimed at "preserving the environment, nature, and culture".
Venice, Italy, is also facing the problem of an influx of tourists and officials claim that it is causing "irreversible damage". As a result, tourists will be charged £4.28 on weekends and other selected days from April to mid-July. The fee is aimed at reducing crowds and the overall number of visitors.
