Elizabeth Line Tunnels Equipped with High-Speed Mobile Coverage
The first tunnelled section of Transport for London’s (TfL) Elizabeth line has now been equipped with high-speed mobile coverage. This upgrade enables passengers traveling between Liverpool Street and Paddington stations to benefit from 4G and 5G coverage in the tunnels.
The first tunnelled section stretches from the Royal Oak portal west of Paddington to Liverpool Street station, covering approximately five miles. This improvement ensures continuous connectivity for passengers throughout their journey.
This summer, additional tunnelled sections to Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, and Woolwich will also be connected. This complements the installation of mobile coverage at all Elizabeth line stations, which was completed earlier this year, enhancing the overall passenger experience. By the end of the summer, more tunnelled sections of the Elizabeth line will be equipped with high-speed mobile coverage, ensuring passengers remain connected throughout their journeys across London.
London's Transport Commissioner, Andy Lord, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "It's wonderful to see our program to introduce high-speed mobile coverage now benefitting passengers on the Elizabeth line, the newest part of London's historic underground network of stations and tunnels. This key step in bringing better connectivity to London's underground stations and tunnels will allow more people traveling around the capital to stay connected, share photos, and make the most of the city, especially as we start to enjoy the summer."
This project marks an important step forward in enhancing the connectivity of London’s transport network. With continuous improvements and expansions, passengers can look forward to a more connected and convenient travel experience. The initiative underscores TfL's commitment to modernizing the city's transport infrastructure and meeting the growing demands for seamless digital connectivity.
