An Air France Boeing 777-200ER, flight AF21 from Los Angeles to Paris, was diverted to Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport on May 9th after passengers and crew detected a burning odor followed by a sudden loss of cabin lighting. The flight, carrying 315 passengers and 13 crew members, landed safely under emergency conditions as a precaution.

The aircraft, registered as F-GSPE, experienced these anomalies approximately four hours into the flight, leading to a swift decision to divert. Upon landing at 10:13 PM local time, emergency services, including firefighters and police, were present, adhering to standard safety protocols. Despite thorough inspections, the source of the burning smell was not immediately located.

The incident led to the cancellation of the flight, leaving passengers stranded in Montreal. Efforts were underway to rebook the affected travelers on subsequent flights to Paris. Air France operates two daily flights from Montreal to Paris, which could potentially accommodate the displaced passengers.

This particular aircraft, a 25-year-old Boeing 777-200ER, is part of a fleet that Air France has relied on for long-haul operations. The jet is configured with 328 seats spread across business, premium economy, and economy classes. Incidents involving burning odors are not uncommon in aviation and can stem from various technical issues, though they rarely result in serious hazards.

Such incidents, while typically not indicating an imminent threat, can cause significant inconvenience and distress for passengers. In 2019, another Air France Boeing 777 experienced a similar issue with a burning smell, resulting in a prolonged return flight to Paris without reaching its destination in Cayenne, French Guyana.

The quick and cautious actions of the flight crew ensured the safety of everyone onboard Air France flight AF21. While the incident caused disruptions and concern, the adherence to strict safety measures and emergency protocols underscored the airline's commitment to passenger safety in unexpected situations.
