A growing number of travelers are embracing "open-jaw" flights, allowing them to explore multiple destinations on a single trip and save money. According to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), 14% of trips in 2023 were multi-city, up from 8% in 2022.

Savvy travelers use open-jaw flights to visit various cities without backtracking, often booking flights from different carriers. The internet has made this easier, with numerous global flight-booking websites and airline codeshare agreements.

Abi Shaw, founder of Bushbaby Travel, has organized bespoke multi-destination trips for two decades. She notes that the rise of airline groups like the Oneworld Alliance provides more options for travelers. Skiers are also using open-jaw flights, with nearly 20% of ski trips sold by flexible holiday tour operator Heidi using this method.

Open-jaw flights allow travelers to see more without the need to return to the same airport. For example, one might fly from London to New York and return from Chicago to London. This flexibility often results in cost savings and a more varied travel experience. American tourists frequently use open-jaw flights to explore Europe, finding them cheaper than standard return flights or two one-way tickets.

James Latimer, a father of two, has found that multi-destination trips can be economical. For instance, his family will fly into Salzburg for skiing, take a train to Vienna for New Year, and then fly back from Munich. This varied trip saved them around £100 per person.

The key to benefiting from open-jaw flights is research, flexibility, and using the right search engines. Travelers should consider multiple one-way flights and be open to flying from different airports. Tour operators with expertise in bespoke trips can also help find the best deals.

While booking independently offers flexibility, it can complicate obtaining refunds or assistance. Using an ATOL-bonded tour operator ensures better protection, combining multiple destinations within one trip for a secure and cost-effective travel experience.
