Free Bus Service in Folkestone Enhances Travel Experience with 'Reach the Beach' Scheme
Starting next month, travelers visiting Folkestone, one of Kent’s most popular seaside towns, can take advantage of a new free bus service. The 'Reach the Beach' scheme will begin on July 20 and run throughout the summer holidays until September 1, offering a convenient and cost-effective way to explore the town's attractions.
Operated by Crosskeys, the service will run seven days a week, connecting six key destinations in Folkestone. With buses departing from Folkestone West railway station every half hour from 10am, and the last bus returning from Folkestone Harbour at 7.45pm, visitors will have ample opportunity to explore. Notably, the route includes popular spots such as the F51 Skate Park, the Old High Street, Folkestone Central railway station, and Shellons Street, with a quick and efficient journey time of just 10 minutes.
For travelers, this new service means seamless travel without the hassle of parking or navigating unfamiliar roads. Alan Johnson, managing director of Crosskeys, highlighted the benefits for both visitors and the local community. The free bus service, also known as Service 51, aims to support local businesses, reduce congestion, and offer an environmentally friendly travel option.
The initiative is funded by approximately £25,000 from the government's Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), allocated to Kent County Council (KCC). A KCC spokesperson explained that the BSIP funding is intended to enhance the bus network. The decision to provide a free service linking key attractions and railway stations was seen as an ideal use of these funds, encouraging both tourists and residents to opt for public transport over cars.
Travelers can expect a hassle-free journey as they hop on and off at various points of interest throughout Folkestone. The bus service’s accessibility and cost-effectiveness make it an attractive alternative for those looking to make the most of their visit. This new initiative ensures that visitors can enjoy the scenic and cultural offerings of Folkestone without the usual travel stress, making it easier to explore everything the town has to offer.
