French low-cost carrier French bee has announced it will suspend its Paris Orly (ORY) to Los Angeles International (LAX) route this winter, as first reported by AeroRoutes. The airline cited "operational reasons" for the schedule adjustment, with services halting between November 2, 2024, and March 28, 2025. Although the airline declined to provide further details, industry speculation points to low demand and heavy competition as potential factors behind the decision.

Temporary Suspension with Plans to Return

According to French bee’s website, the route will return in late March 2025, coinciding with the start of the aviation summer season. The airline had initially planned to operate thrice weekly flights with the Airbus A350-900, increasing frequency during the holiday season before scaling back in January. However, the revised schedule sees the route suspended earlier than last year, when services were paused from mid-January to March 31.

In the interim, passengers booked on the Paris-LAX route during the suspension period can modify their tickets for other U.S. routes offered by French bee, including San Francisco, New York, and Miami. Refunds or credits are also available.

Competitive Paris-Los Angeles Market

The Paris-Los Angeles sector is highly competitive, with multiple airlines offering services between Paris’ main airports and LAX. In addition to French bee, Air France, Delta Air Lines, Norse Atlantic Airways, and Air Tahiti Nui operate on the route. Air France dominates the market, deploying both Airbus A350-900s and Boeing 777-300ERs with a significant seat capacity. Delta also maintains a strong presence with its A330-900neo.

Like French bee, Norse Atlantic Airways does not plan to operate on the Paris-LAX route during the winter due to lower demand, highlighting the challenges faced by low-cost carriers in this sector during the off-peak season.

Adjusting to Seasonal Demand

The temporary suspension of French bee’s Paris-LAX service is likely a strategic move to avoid flying with underfilled planes during the slower winter months. By focusing its aircraft on routes with higher demand, the airline aims to optimize its fleet utilization and maintain profitability. French bee plans to resume service at the end of March 2025, just in time for the busy summer travel season.
