German Rail System at Risk of Derailment Due to Aging Infrastructure
As the excitement builds for Euro 2024, worries emerge about Germany's railway system's ability to handle the influx of football fans expected to travel across the country for the tournament. The once-revered symbol of efficiency and punctuality, Germany's trains, now face criticism due to aging infrastructure, frequent delays, and occasional strikes by workers.
With 36 percent of long-distance trains running behind schedule last year, passengers have experienced breakdowns, cancellations, and closed restaurant carriages, raising doubts about the reliability of the rail network.
Paul Goodwin from the Scottish Football Supporters Association advises fans, especially those attending matches far from their accommodations, to plan their travel wisely and allow extra time due to potential delays.
Deutsche Bahn asserts its readiness for the influx of tens of thousands of additional passengers from all over Europe. The company is adding 10,000 extra train seats per day during match days, offering discounted fares for ticket holders, and even introducing a Euros-themed train adorned with tournament logos.
Additionally, organizers are simplifying travel for visitors by arranging for teams to play in three different geographic regions of Germany during the group stages—south, north, or west—reducing the need for extensive travel for both fans and teams.
