In recent years, Denmark has emerged as a surprising refuge for travelers from Southern Europe suffering from unbearable heat. The cooler weather and longer daylight hours are drawing a growing number of visitors from countries with warmer climates, such as Italy and France.

According to reports, the number of Italian and French travelers arriving in Copenhagen this June surged by 23% compared to 2019. Visitors, weary of extreme temperatures in their home countries, are increasingly opting for Denmark as a vacation spot. In interviews, tourists reveal that their decision to escape the intense southern heat led them to seek out the North, where they can enjoy not only pleasant weather but also explore new experiences.

A significant draw for travelers heading to Denmark is not just the milder weather but also the extended summer days. During the summer solstice, sunset in Denmark is at 10 p.m., providing visitors nearly an hour of extra daylight compared to Italy. This is particularly attractive to those who value spending more time outdoors, soaking in the natural beauty and cultural landmarks.

Beyond the capital, Southern Zealand, located approximately 80 kilometers from Copenhagen, is also becoming a favorite among tourists. Philip Rasmuson, who runs a hotel in the town of Præstø, notes that his business has grown considerably over the past two years thanks to the rise in visitors from Southern Europe. According to him, the primary reason guests from Italy and Spain give for their visit is their need to escape the oppressive heat.

Danish tourism organizations are also pleased to witness the surge in tourist numbers, particularly in light of wildfires and extreme temperatures in Greece and Spain. Although the tragic events in other countries have played a role in Denmark's growing appeal, industry professionals warmly invite visitors to "cool off" in their country. Moreover, as the agencies emphasize, it’s not just the weather that draws tourists: Denmark’s unique landscapes, historical sites, and gourmet cuisine are also significant factors in its rising popularity among Europeans.

Thus, Denmark, with its temperate climate and rich cultural offerings, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for travelers looking to escape the harsh weather conditions in their home countries.
