The Bahamas is replete with idyllic private islands, some of which can only be reached by cruise ship. Among them is Half Moon Cay. Formerly known as Little San Salvador, the island was acquired by Holland America Line (owned by Carnival Corporation, the parent company of Holland America and other cruise lines including Carnival, Princess, Seabourn, Cunard and others) in 1996.

The island was officially opened as a port of call in 1997 and has been hosting cruise ships ever since. Its new name comes from the name of the ship on the former Holland America emblem (Halve Maen, captained by none other than Henry Hudson). Coincidentally, the island boasts a beautiful crescent-shaped beach, which makes the name even more appropriate. Here's what you need to know about visiting Half Moon Cay, according to travel experts, writes Travel + Leisure.

How to get to Half Moon Cay

Both Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line make stops on this private island paradise. Carnival and Holland America offer a variety of itineraries from several ports in North America that include stops at Half Moon Cay.

What to do on Half Moon Cay

"There is no shortage of things to do on Half Moon Cay!" says Kari Dillon, travel consultant and owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels. With miles of sandy beaches, clear blue waters and stunning scenery all around, this private island offers something for everyone. Best of all, according to Formby, "Half Moon Cay can be a free port stop," thanks to free amenities like sun loungers, a splash pad, and a playground for kids. Whether you prefer to relax on the beach or go on an action-packed excursion, here are some of the best things to do on Half Moon Cay.

Beach activities

Half Moon Cay is perfect for beach lovers, says Dillon. According to the travel guide, those looking for extra solitude should walk further down the beach. Often, "the further you get away from the tender zone, the more secluded the beach becomes," Formby explains.

Alternatively, while the aforementioned loungers are great, you can spend the day swinging in one of the hammocks (available on a first-come, first-served basis) or renting sunbeds or umbrellas for extra shade. Cruisers can also rent snorkeling gear, floats (from simple single tubes to large inflatable multi-person boats called "Bana"), and a selection of water sports equipment including jet skis, kayaks, pedal boats, and stand up paddle boards.

Excursions and tours

Both Holland America and Carnival offer several tours and excursions at Half Moon Cay. Favorites include horseback riding on the beach, kayaking adventures, snorkeling excursions, glass-bottom boat tours, and stingray encounters. On land, cruise passengers can go on a bicycle tour or nature walk (both self-guided and guided options are available). Alternatively, sign up for a guided tram tour of the island to stop at its most popular spots while enjoying the magnificent views.

Renting cottages

For a real treat, spend money on renting a house or villa. The former is ideal for small groups, as the starting price (around $500) includes up to four guests (two additional guests can also use a cabin, but expect to pay an additional fee per person). Amenities include snacks (chips, dips, and fruit), drinks (water and soda), and use of floating mats and snorkeling gear. The cabin has a refrigerator, outdoor dining table and chairs, two sun loungers and a shower.

Two-story beach villas are also available for rent and include all of the above, as well as a five-person hot tub. The starting price of $800 USD is based on eight guests; for groups exceeding eight people, you will be charged an additional fee for each person (although a maximum of 18 people are allowed per villa).

Meals

When it comes to drinking and dining on Half Moon Cay, there are several options. Travelers on a budget can take advantage of the open-air barbecue lunch, which Dillon says is "delicious, so you don't have to go back to the ship." The buffet includes favorites like burgers, hot dogs, chicken, fruit, salads, and desserts.

The island boasts three additional bars, including The Bell Bar and Rum Runners. The most famous bar is the Captain Morgan On the Rocks bar in the shape of a pirate ship, which, according to Formby, is "one of the attractions of Half Moon Cay.

Tips for visiting

There is no Wi-Fi on the island, so the expert recommends bringing another form of communication (such as walkie-talkies) to use if you get separated from your group.

Dillon also shares a few tips and tricks worth taking into account. First, don't forget to bring towels from the ship with you ashore. Secondly, remember that the earlier you get off the ship, the better your chances of getting a spot on a first-class beach. Otherwise, walk a little further down the beach to find more secluded spots.

Also, even though the island has a small post office, where guests can send postcards to friends and family back home is a fun and inexpensive activity for everyone in your group. You can also treat your loved ones to something from the on-site gift shop or straw market. Animal lovers may have the opportunity to take a selfie with Ted, the incredibly adorable donkey that lives on the island.

Last but not least, couples can even get married on Half Moon Cay. The oceanfront scenery and the on-site chapel make for an ideal wedding venue. Both cruise lines offer wedding packages and can provide additional information and assistance to plan your special day.
