Passengers of Hawaiian Airlines Flight 5 were left stranded at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas after the Airbus A330-200 they were supposed to board was damaged by a baggage belt loader. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, May 8th, forced the airline to cancel the flight, initially scheduled to depart at 18:30 local time to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu.

Collision Leads to Extended Delays

The collision with the baggage belt loader necessitated a thorough inspection by maintenance teams, but the crew timed out before the aircraft could be cleared for flight, leading to the cancellation. The airline rescheduled the flight for Thursday morning, but further unspecified delays pushed the departure back to early Saturday, May 11th.

Passenger Frustrations and Airline Responses

As the delays mounted, passengers expressed their frustrations with the airline's handling of the situation. Nichole, one of the affected passengers, voiced concerns over the uncertainty of departure and the inconvenience caused by the extended delay. She reported that despite assurances from Hawaiian Airlines, her party had to check out of their hotel and manage their luggage independently, incurring significant personal expenses.

The airline attempted to mitigate the inconvenience by providing hotel accommodations and $20 food vouchers, though some passengers, like Nichole, faced difficulties with these arrangements due to limited hotel availability and had to resort to sharing rooms.

Airline's Commitment to Resolution

Hawaiian Airlines apologized for the inconvenience and directed passengers to contact customer service for refunds and reimbursements for additional expenses incurred. The airline pledged to process these refunds within four weeks.

Aircraft Status and Operational Updates

Following the incident, the aircraft was inspected and ferried back to Honolulu as HAL Flight 6. It is scheduled to return to service on Sunday, operating as HAL Flight 10 from Honolulu to Los Angeles.
