How much should you tip the hotel maid: explanation
A new study reveals that most hotel guests don't tip at all. Experts say this behavior is very wrong.
According to a study by The Vacationer, only 39% of hotel guests tip the staff, meaning that 61% of customers do not, as reported by InsideHook.
Hotel cleaners, of course, expect tips, partly due to their low wages. The average hourly wage for a hotel housekeeper in the United States typically ranges from $12 to $14. In other words, as a new Thrillist report notes, tips, in many cases, make "the difference between a living wage and a poverty wage."
How much should you tip your housekeeper?
According to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, the answer is between $1 and $5 per day, but, as one Thrillist travel expert noted, "$5 is the new $1." Therefore, the closer to $5, the better, but generally not less than $2. Additionally, the "per day" condition is extremely important because you may not have the same housekeeper every day during your stay.
