Shikoku: discovering Kochi and Ehime

Embark on an unforgettable journey with Walk Japan's Shikoku: Kochi & Ehime Discovery, a guided walking tour that showcases the hidden treasures of Japan's fourth main island. Designed for those who enjoy regular walks, the tour runs from September to June and offers a full guide experience through the unspoiled landscapes of Kochi and Ehime.

The adventure begins in Kochi, a bustling urban area. Travelling through the tranquil countryside, daily walks cover approximately 5.6 to 7.5 miles on ancient and historic trails, highlighting the leisurely lifestyle in this remote region. The trails include pilgrimage routes, remote countryside trails, and tranquil country lanes.

The walk also includes a mini-pilgrimage, visiting some of the 88 temples known in the 746-mile Shikoku Henro pilgrimage. This unique journey also follows in the footsteps of Sakamoto Ryoma, a revered individual who escaped from his feudal samurai clan and played a key role in the establishment of Japan's modern government in 1868.

Michinoku Coastal Trail

The Michinoku Coastal Trail is a fascinating tour of the Tohoku region of Japan. This 9-day adventure starts in Hachinohe and ends in Kesennuma. The trail runs along sections of the Michinoku Shiokaze Coastal Trail, passing through Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.

The undulating route includes grassy promenades, remote beaches, high cliff tops and picturesque coastal villages. The tour also emphasizes the resilience and friendliness of local communities, showcasing the region's recovery from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Established as a symbol of recovery, the Michinoku Shiokaze Coastal Trail stretches approximately 637 miles along the Pacific Ocean.

Starting from Hachinohe, you will travel south, sometimes by local trains. Here, in this beautiful corner of Japan, the coastline changes from cliffs to bays and ancient Shinto temples watch over the cities. Highlights include the classic pine coastlines and Jodogahama, a breathtaking cliff framed by an emerald sea. The tour ends in Kesennuma, one of the world's most fertile fishing grounds.

Seafood lovers are in for a real treat as this region is rich in abalone, oysters, clams, salmon and squid. Most rooms offer ocean views, and there are also soaking tubs to relax in before dinner. Those who like to rise early can enjoy spectacular sunrises over the Pacific Ocean.
