Intoxicated Woman Causes Chaos on Alaska Airlines Flight, Faces Federal Charges
An Alaska Airlines flight from Bethel to Anchorage descended into chaos Tuesday night as a passenger, later identified as 38-year-old Caryn Evan of Chefornak, exhibited aggressive and uncontrollable behavior. The incident, which involved physical altercations and required intervention from crew and passengers, resulted in Evan's arrest upon landing at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.
Incident Details
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the disruption began as the plane prepared for its descent into Anchorage. Witnesses reported Evan flailing her arms, yelling, hitting her husband, and slamming her head against the seat in front of her. Her behavior escalated to the point where a flight attendant requested assistance from passengers to help restrain her.
A nurse onboard stepped in to assist, and the flight crew eventually subdued Evan using flex cuffs. Charging documents reveal that Evan was under the influence of alcohol, which her husband stated she consumed in excess prior to boarding to manage her flying anxiety.
Legal Consequences
Evan was arrested upon arrival in Anchorage and charged with interference with flight crew members, a serious federal offense. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in prison. After being held in custody, she was released from jail on Friday. Her defense team has yet to comment on the case, and her next court date is set for December 3.
Flight Safety Concerns
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges airlines face with in-flight disruptions, particularly those involving intoxicated passengers. Such behavior poses a significant risk to flight safety and often necessitates swift intervention by both crew and passengers. Airlines continue to emphasize strict policies regarding alcohol consumption and passenger conduct to ensure a safe travel environment.
