Japan Airlines Introduces Akita Specialty "Iburigakko" on Helsinki-Haneda Flights
Japan Airlines (JAL), in collaboration with Akita Prefecture's Akita Food Promotion Division and Ogachino Kimuraya Co., has introduced a new inflight menu featuring "Iburigakko," a smoked pickled radish specialty from Akita. This new menu is available in premium economy and economy class on flights from Helsinki to Haneda, starting June 1, 2024.
The initiative aims to promote Akita's local products and stimulate interest in the region through cultural exchange and unique culinary experiences. The "Iburigakko" salad with cheese highlights the rich flavors of Akita and Northern Europe, enhancing the inflight dining experience for passengers.
"Iburigakko" has been well-received at food fairs in Finland and neighboring countries. This marks the first time JAL has included Akita's specialty in international inflight meals originating from overseas. By incorporating local delicacies into its menu, JAL hopes to boost the export of Akita's traditional foods and introduce international travelers to the unique tastes of the region.
"Iburigakko," meaning "smoked pickles" in the Akita dialect, is a preserved food traditionally dried in the hearths of homes during winter. The process of smoking and slow fermentation in low temperatures creates its distinctive umami flavor. This initiative not only supports local producers but also offers passengers a taste of Akita's culinary heritage.
Available on Flight JL48, the new menu will be served from June 1 to August 31, 2024. This collaboration reflects JAL's commitment to promoting regional specialties and providing passengers with diverse and memorable dining experiences.
