Japan Airlines Updates Fuel Surcharge Rates for Spring 2024
Japan Airlines (JAL) is making changes to its fuel surcharges for international flights, affecting tickets issued in Japan from April to May 2024. The airline has submitted a request to Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) for the adjustment of these surcharges based on recent fuel price trends.
The fuel surcharge rates, which JAL revises every two months, depend on the average price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel. For the period of December 2023 and January 2024, the average fuel price was USD 101.72 per barrel, leading to a new surcharge level known as Zone I for the upcoming period.
What does this mean for travelers? For flights between April 1 and May 31, 2024, passengers will see a decrease in fuel surcharges across various destinations. For example, the surcharge for flights from Japan to Korea and parts of Russia will drop from 5,300 Yen to 3,500 Yen. Similarly, charges for flights to East Asia, excluding Korea and Mongolia, will be reduced from 10,300 Yen to 8,500 Yen, with similar reductions applied to other routes.
These adjustments reflect JAL's response to the fluctuating jet fuel market, aiming to keep travel affordable for its international passengers. The updated surcharge rates, pending government approval, will apply not only to JAL-operated flights but also to code-share flights operated by its partners.
Travelers planning to fly with Japan Airlines during this period can check the official JAL website for full details on the updated fuel surcharge policy. This move by JAL is part of its ongoing efforts to balance operational costs with competitive fare offerings, ensuring that passengers continue to enjoy high-quality service at more accessible prices.
