Japan's transport ministry carried out an emergency inspection of Japan Airlines (JAL) today, following a series of safety-related incidents over the past seven months. This marks the first surprise inspection of the airline in several months.

The inspection was prompted by several safety concerns, including the notable Airbus A350 collision with a coast guard aircraft at Haneda Airport, which resulted in the deaths of five out of six crew members on the coast guard plane. The transport ministry's unannounced visit aimed to scrutinize JAL's daily flight operations and safety management practices at their facilities near the airport.

According to Kyodo News, four officials conducted the investigation, which involved interviews with airline staff. The ministry emphasized that any discrepancies found would lead to immediate corrective actions. Transport Minister Tetsuo Saito addressed the gravity of the situation, stating, "We take this matter very seriously and will work hard to restore confidence in aviation."

In the past week alone, two incidents raised further concerns about JAL's safety protocols. On the previous day, two JAL Airbus A350-900s collided at Haneda Airport, resulting in the cancellation of a flight to New Chitose Airport. Although no injuries were reported, the minor collision highlighted potential issues in ground handling and aircraft maneuvering.

Another incident occurred a week ago at Fukuoka Airport, where a JAL plane mistakenly crossed into an active runway during another aircraft's takeoff procedure. Quick action by air traffic control prevented a collision, but the incident underscored the need for rigorous communication and procedural adherence. The transport ministry plans to review the communication recordings between the pilots and air traffic control to understand the cause of the error.

JAL has expressed regret over the recent incidents, issuing a statement, "We apologize for causing concerns. We will analyze the cause of the incident, including communications with air traffic control, under the guidance of the transport ministry and work to prevent a recurrence."

This emergency inspection is part of ongoing efforts to maintain high safety standards in Japan's aviation sector. While JAL has faced several challenges recently, the airline is working closely with the transport ministry to address and rectify safety concerns to ensure passenger and crew safety.
