JetBlue Airbus A321 Diverts to Kansas After Cargo Smoke Alarm
On September 21st, a JetBlue Airbus A321-200 (flight B6-1189) en route from New York’s JFK to San Diego made an emergency landing in Salina, Kansas, following a cargo smoke indication. The crew received the smoke warning mid-flight and diverted, safely landing at Salina’s small airport just 17 minutes later. The incident delayed passengers by eight hours as a replacement aircraft was flown in to continue the journey.
Passengers described a rapid descent and noted that flight attendants appeared concerned, with mist reportedly seen coming through the air conditioning vents. Upon landing, passengers were transported by local school buses to the terminal, where they were provided with snacks and water. The original aircraft, grounded due to the deployment of its fire suppression system, was sent back to Boston for inspection.
A replacement JetBlue aircraft later picked up the stranded passengers, continuing the flight to San Diego after an eight-hour delay.
