A Jetstar Airways flight from Auckland to Dunedin had to return to Auckland after encountering significant turbulence. The decision to turn back was made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of the passengers and crew. No injuries were reported during the incident.

The Incident

Flight JQ285, which operates daily from Auckland to Dunedin, departed late on June 1, leaving at 14:24 instead of the scheduled 13:35. The flight encountered severe turbulence about an hour into its journey at a cruising altitude of 36,000 feet. The turbulence occurred above the Southern Range and Lewis Pass, an area known for strong wind disruptions.

The pilot decided to descend to 28,000 feet and change course towards Christchurch before ultimately deciding to return to Auckland. Severe wind warnings had been issued across Christchurch and Canterbury, affecting several flights and causing significant weather-related disruptions, including scrub fires due to high temperatures.

Response and Passenger Safety

Jetstar took immediate action to ensure passenger safety. The airline confirmed that the turbulence was significant but managed effectively by the experienced crew. The aircraft returned to Auckland approximately two hours after departure.

A Jetstar spokesperson provided the following statement to Simple Flying:

"A flight from Auckland to Dunedin experienced significant turbulence on Saturday afternoon, with our Captain reporting strong wind fluctuations on the flightpath before electing to return to Auckland as a precaution. No injuries were reported; however, we appreciate this would have been unsettling for customers on board."

"Aircraft are built to withstand adverse weather and turbulence, and our pilots and crew are highly trained to manage these situations. We rescheduled an alternative flight for Sunday with overnight hotel accommodation provided, and we sincerely thank everyone for their flexibility while we worked to get them on their way again as quickly as possible."

Jetstar Operations in New Zealand

Jetstar, a subsidiary of Qantas, operates several domestic routes across New Zealand using Airbus A320 aircraft. The airline's domestic base at Auckland Airport includes direct flights to Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, and Dunedin. Additionally, Jetstar operates trans-Tasman flights between New Zealand and Australia.

In Conclusion

The incident highlights Jetstar's commitment to passenger safety and the importance of taking precautionary measures in adverse weather conditions. The airline's swift response and provision of accommodation for affected passengers underscore its dedication to customer service during unexpected disruptions.
