KLM Proposes Comprehensive Plan to Reduce Noise Impact at Schiphol Airport
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has presented its vision on the Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management’s recently updated measures to mitigate noise pollution around Schiphol Airport. The airline emphasizes achieving noise reduction goals without compromising the Netherlands' economic interests and international connectivity.
The airline supports the ministry’s adoption of several industry recommendations from the "Cleaner, Quieter, More Fuel Efficient" plan but highlights significant discrepancies. KLM argues that the ministry's current strategy falls short of the Balanced Approach regulations, which ensure noise reduction efforts do not disproportionately impact the aviation sector.
KLM’s proposal focuses on fleet renewal, advanced operational procedures, and the strategic use of quieter aircraft at night. These measures, supported by calculations from the Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR), suggest that KLM can exceed the government's noise reduction targets by November 2026 without reducing aircraft movements at Schiphol.
KLM underscores the need for the Balanced Approach principles, ensuring that measures are both balanced and effective. This means adhering to objective and legal standards, ensuring cost-effectiveness, and maintaining realistic timelines for implementing noise reduction strategies. The proposal aims to balance reducing noise impact and maintaining essential global connections crucial for the Netherlands' economy and residents.
The Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management will review the submitted visions from various stakeholders to refine its noise reduction measures. KLM remains dedicated to collaborating with the ministry to finalize a balanced and effective plan that minimizes noise pollution while preserving the country's vital international ties.
