Lib Dems Manifesto Promises Bus Service Revamp
The Liberal Democrats have introduced a manifesto focused on enhancing bus services in England, promising significant changes that could benefit both everyday commuters and travelers. The party aims to improve bus franchising powers for local authorities and simplify funding to restore and expand routes, particularly in rural areas.
The manifesto criticizes the current state of bus services under the Conservative government, describing them as "in rapid decline." To counter this, the Lib Dems plan to maintain the £2 bus fare cap grant outside London while also conducting a comprehensive fare review.
One of the standout proposals includes integrating bus, rail, and light rail ticketing with a daily cap, granting local authorities the power to implement network-wide ticketing. This change is expected to make travel more seamless and affordable for passengers.
In addition, the party proposes extending half-fares on buses to 18-year-olds and introducing a "Young Person’s Buscard" for those aged 19-25, offering a third off bus and tram fares. This initiative is designed to encourage young travelers to use public transport more frequently.
Addressing concerns from the bus industry, the Lib Dems plan to consolidate multiple funding streams into a single pot to expand services and support the introduction of zero-emission vehicles. They also aim to extend current funding programs to further the transition to zero-emission transport.
For rural areas, where traditional bus services may not be feasible, the manifesto suggests alternatives like demand responsive transport. While the document doesn't mention coaches specifically, it does promise more charging points for battery-electric vehicles and increased grid capacity, which could indirectly support coach services.
The manifesto also indicates a potential restriction on shorter domestic flights, favoring rail alternatives, which might boost the market for scheduled coach services.
