LNER and Partners Enhance Travel Experience with Coffee Cup Run
Travelers on the East Coast rail route can look forward to smoother, more reliable journeys thanks to an innovative initiative known as the Coffee Cup Run. This event brings together senior leaders, infrastructure experts, engineers, and operations specialists from the East Coast Partnership to travel between Edinburgh Waverley and London King’s Cross. During this journey, they focus on identifying and addressing potential issues that could impact the travel experience.
The Coffee Cup Run is more than just a networking event; it’s a hands-on approach to improving the performance, reliability, and safety of the rail service. As the train speeds along at 125 mph, teams from Network Rail, LNER, Hitachi Rail, and Northern Trains use advanced on-train monitoring systems and live-streamed CCTV footage to pinpoint areas affecting ride quality. Last year’s journey resulted in more than a dozen improvements, directly benefiting passengers.
This year’s event focused on key infrastructure challenges such as overhead lines, cable theft, and the impacts of weather on services. Additionally, the teams explored how technology could further enhance the travel experience, ensuring that passengers enjoy a smoother ride.
John Grainger, Joint Head of Performance for the East Coast Partnership, highlighted the innovative approach of the Coffee Cup Run. He noted how the event allows teams to see firsthand how their efforts can improve the customer journey, fostering collaboration and driving improvements. Paul Rutter, Route Director for Network Rail’s East Coast route, praised the initiative for its role in delivering positive changes, such as the improved ride quality at Colton Junction near York.
For travelers, the Coffee Cup Run signifies a commitment to providing a high-performing, customer-focused railway. By working together, these experts are dedicated to ensuring that every journey on the East Coast route is as smooth and reliable as possible, enhancing the overall travel experience.
