Lufthansa Boeing 787 Diverts Back to Denver After Gear Problem
A Lufthansa Boeing 787-9, operating flight LH-447 from Denver, Colorado to Frankfurt, Germany, was forced to return to Denver International Airport after experiencing landing gear issues shortly after takeoff on September 25, 2024. The aircraft, registered D-ABPE, had taken off from runway 08 and stopped its climb at 10,000 feet when the crew identified that the landing gear doors were not closing properly.
To ensure a safe return, the crew dumped fuel before landing safely on Denver’s runway 16R approximately 55 minutes after departure. The aircraft remains on the ground in Denver as of September 28, 2024, awaiting repairs.
A passenger on board reported that the flight had already been delayed due to a medical emergency, which required the aircraft to return to the apron prior to departure. Once the issue was resolved and the plane refueled, it took off again but soon encountered the landing gear malfunction. Both the September 25 flight and the next day's flight were canceled as a result.
Lufthansa has not yet announced when the aircraft will be cleared for service.
