Lufthansa Changes Airbus A380 Winter Plan on Route Between Munich and Delhi
Lufthansa has updated its winter schedule for 2024/2025, expanding its use of the Airbus A380 to three routes, including extending the Munich to Delhi service through the winter. This move marks an increase from last year's two A380 routes.
The Airbus A380, with its 509-seat capacity and four-class configuration, including first class, has been operating on the Munich-Delhi route since March 31, 2024. Initially, it was set to be replaced by the 318-seat Airbus A350-900 on October 27, but Lufthansa has decided to continue using the A380, providing 191 additional seats per flight each way, a 60% increase.
In November, the schedule for the Munich-Delhi route includes a daily flight with a quick turnaround time of 1 hour and 40 minutes in India. This service supplements Lufthansa's daily Frankfurt-Delhi route, which will be operated by a Boeing 747-400 during the winter season. The Munich departure at 12:15 PM is designed to connect efficiently with various European flights and multiple North American services, despite the early 6:15 AM arrival being less convenient for onward flights to the US and Canada.
Lufthansa's winter plan for the A380 includes the following three routes, all based on November schedules:
- Munich to Delhi
- Munich to Los Angeles
- Munich to Bangkok
Booking data from OAG Traffic Analyzer indicates that last year, Lufthansa's Munich-Delhi-Munich flights, without the A380, carried over 115,000 transit passengers. A significant portion of these passengers (73%) traveled to or from Europe, with North America making up most of the remaining traffic.
At the country level, the top markets were Canada, Germany, the US, Italy, Spain, France, the UK, Austria, Switzerland, and Sweden. Toronto-Delhi was the most popular route via Munich, followed by Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Vienna, Vancouver, Hamburg, and London Heathrow.
This extension of A380 service highlights Lufthansa's strategy to capitalize on high travel demand, especially during peak travel seasons in India, and to offer enhanced capacity and comfort on key international routes.
