Lufthansa Group Introduces Environmental Cost Surcharge
Starting from June 26, 2024, the Lufthansa Group will implement an Environmental Cost Surcharge on all tickets issued for departures from January 1, 2025. This surcharge will apply to flights departing from the 27 European Union (EU) countries, as well as the UK, Norway, and Switzerland. The surcharge aims to offset the rising costs associated with regulatory environmental requirements.
The new surcharge varies depending on the flight route and fare, ranging from 1 euro to 72 euros. This initiative reflects Lufthansa’s commitment to more sustainable flying practices. The exact amount of the surcharge will be displayed on the Lufthansa Group Airlines booking pages in the price details.
The Lufthansa Group invests billions annually in new technologies and collaborates with partners to drive innovations that promote sustainable aviation. Despite these investments, the increasing regulatory costs cannot be borne by the airline alone. The Environmental Cost Surcharge will cover part of the expected costs for the year 2025, helping to manage the financial burden of these environmental regulations.
With ambitious climate protection targets, Lufthansa aims to achieve a neutral CO₂ balance by 2050. By 2030, the group plans to halve its net CO₂ emissions compared to 2019 through a combination of reduction and compensation measures. Key strategies include accelerated fleet modernization, continuous optimization of flight operations, the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and sustainable travel options for both private and corporate customers.
Lufthansa's initiative aligns with broader efforts in the aviation industry to address environmental impact and comply with evolving regulations. This move is a step towards balancing operational sustainability with regulatory demands, ensuring that the airline can continue to offer responsible travel options in the future.
