Major Bridge Reconstruction Causes Rail and Road Disruptions in Selby Area
Starting from Sunday, May 26th to Monday, June 3rd, significant rail and road disruptions are expected in the Selby area as the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) team undertakes major bridge reconstruction work. The project focuses on replacing the railway bridge deck over the A162 London Road between Sherburn-in-Elmet and Barkston Ash. This bridge, originally opened in 1869, requires replacement to accommodate future electrification of the line, allowing for more frequent, faster, and heavier passenger and freight trains.
The A162 London Road will be closed from 8:00 AM on May 26th until 12:01 AM on June 3rd. A signed diversion route via the A1(M) will be in place for cars and heavy goods vehicles, and a shuttle service will be provided for pedestrians.
From May 28th to May 31st, the bridge deck will be replaced, resulting in some trains being diverted via Castleford. Rail replacement buses will operate between Church Fenton, Ulleskelf stations, and York, as well as Micklefield for connections to Leeds. Train services between York, Selby, and Hull will continue as usual.
Passengers are advised to check travel details with National Rail Enquiries or their train operator, as train services will resume on June 1st. This project is a crucial step towards enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the railway network between York, Leeds, and Manchester.
Chris Nutton, Major Projects Director at TransPennine Express, emphasized the importance of these upgrades, noting that while journey times may be slightly longer due to diversions, these efforts are essential for the future improvements planned for the Transpennine Route. This project, initially scheduled for the Christmas period, was postponed due to adverse weather conditions.
Upon completion, the upgrades will contribute to a cleaner, more efficient railway, benefiting both passengers and freight services in the region.
