Travelers should brace for significant disruptions in Birmingham next month due to major engineering work in the Duddeston area. From August 17 to 26, essential track alterations will take place as part of long-term improvements to the rail network and preparations for the HS2 high-speed railway.

This work includes relocating a railway signal and moving a section of track across a new bridge at Duddeston Mill Road, constructed by HS2 and Balfour Beatty VINCI. Network Rail engineers will also replace 450 meters of track and two 'crossovers' between Birmingham New Street and Coleshill Parkway stations. These upgrades aim to improve the reliability and smoothness of journeys for passengers and freight services.

The engineering work will affect several important routes, including services between Birmingham New Street and Leicester, Peterborough, Cambridge, and Stansted Airport. These routes are vital as they connect major cities and key transport hubs, facilitating both business and leisure travel. Services between Cardiff Central and Birmingham New Street to Nottingham will also be impacted. This corridor is crucial for linking the West Midlands with South Wales and the East Midlands, supporting economic and cultural exchanges.

Additionally, routes from Scotland and the North East to Birmingham New Street and the South West will see changes. These long-distance services are essential for connecting different regions of the UK, promoting tourism, and enabling efficient travel for both local residents and visitors. Despite efforts to minimize disruptions, the scale of the work necessitates closing the railway for ten days.

Patrick Cawley, director of ‘On Network Works’ for Network Rail and HS2, emphasized the progress in HS2 preparations and thanked travelers for their patience. He advised checking journeys in advance through CrossCountry or the National Rail Enquiries website or app. For travelers, this means planning ahead is crucial. Georgia Ehrmann, CrossCountry’s Regional Director for the West Midlands and North West, urged passengers traveling to Water Orton, Coleshill Parkway, or through Birmingham between August 16 and 27 to allow extra time for their journeys.

During the construction period, long-distance CrossCountry trains will be diverted, leading to longer travel times. Regional services linking the East Midlands and Anglia with Birmingham will start and end at Coleshill Parkway, with replacement buses operating between Coleshill Parkway, Water Orton, and Birmingham New Street stations. These regional links are particularly important for daily commuters and regional tourism, ensuring connectivity across diverse areas.

Additionally, improvement work will occur over the weekends of August 10-11 and August 31-September 1, further affecting travel plans. Motorists should note that Coleshill Parkway station car park will be closed from August 17 to 27, and all vehicles must be removed by the evening of August 16. Travelers needing extra assistance can contact CrossCountry’s Passenger Assist team at 0800 030 9224 or via email at [email protected]. More information is available on the National Rail website and CrossCountry’s dedicated webpage.
