Maximize Suitcase Space with Marie Kondo’s Folding Method
Packing for a holiday can be a daunting task, but a simple folding technique from renowned organizational expert Marie Kondo can help you save space and prevent wrinkles. Known for her Netflix series, Kondo advises travelers to only pack items that "spark joy," ensuring unnecessary items stay at home.
Kondo emphasizes the importance of efficient packing: "Don’t waste precious suitcase space on items better suited for home. Your back and shoulders will thank you when you’re not lugging excess weight around." To achieve this, she recommends her "file folding clothes" method, which maximizes suitcase space and keeps your outfits easily viewable.
Folding Trousers and Shorts
Start by laying the bottoms flat with the front side up, then fold them in half widthwise so the legs lie on top of each other. Fold from the ankles towards the waistband, leaving a small gap between the waistband and the folded legs. Continue folding from bottom to top until the trousers form a small rectangle that can stand upright. For shorts, follow the same steps and fold from top to bottom after the initial widthwise fold.
Folding Tops
Lay the top flat with the front side up, then divide it into vertical thirds: left side (including the left sleeve), middle (including the neckline), and right side (including the right sleeve). Fold the left side inward across the center line, then fold the sleeve back towards the left, creating a neat rectangle. Repeat on the right side. Fold the top lengthwise, leaving a small gap at the edge, then fold in halves from top to bottom. The result should be a compact, rectangular parcel that stands on its own.
Marie Kondo’s method not only saves space but also keeps clothes organized and wrinkle-free, making your holiday packing stress-free and efficient.
