Meet the Himalayan Trekking Guide Reclaiming the Mountains for Women
Sumitra Acharya, a 27-year-old Nepalese trekking guide, is part of a new generation of women claiming their place in the male-dominated outdoor industry. Starting as a trekking porter in 2019, she faced numerous challenges but has since risen to lead expeditions to Everest Base Camp and Annapurna, inspiring other women to follow in her footsteps.
Breaking Gender Barriers in Nepal’s Trekking Industry
Despite a willingness among women, societal expectations often confine them to household roles. Long stretches of work in predominantly male groups further deter women from entering the field. However, Sumitra’s journey began when she saw an opportunity with Intrepid Travel, which was seeking female porters. Initially hesitant, she was encouraged by her mother to give it a try.
Overcoming Challenges and Stereotypes
Sumitra faced skepticism and discouragement from relatives and male porters alike, who doubted her capabilities and suggested she should settle for a traditional life. However, support from her parents and colleagues at Intrepid helped her persevere. They taught her essential skills and offered emotional support, which was crucial for her resilience.
Shifts in the Industry
Since Sumitra joined, the number of female porters, assistant guides, and leaders at Intrepid has grown significantly. From a few women when she started, there are now 37 and counting. Young women are increasingly pursuing careers in trekking, bolstered by education and a desire for independence, challenging traditional familial expectations.
A Passion for the Outdoors
Sumitra’s passion for trekking was ignited during her studies in agriculture in Jiri town, where she hiked Cherdung Hill, proving to herself she could conquer mountains. Her favorite treks include Everest and Manaslu, the world's eighth-highest peak, known for its untouched local culture. She dreams of exploring Upper Dolpo in Nepal’s far west.
Proudest Achievements
Sumitra takes pride in inspiring other women through her story and in showcasing Nepal to global visitors. Her journey from a hesitant porter to a confident leader exemplifies determination and the transformative power of following one’s passion.
