Mexico's largest airline returns: When Mexicana will rise up to the sky again
One of the largest air carriers, Mexicana, which ceased to exist in 2010, plans to celebrate the New Year by returning to the skies. It became known that the company planned its revival before the holidays.
Despite the fact that the deal to lease commercial aircraft fell through, the airline will still launch new routes by the New Year 2024. According to media reports, the company is now run by the Mexican military, flyertalk reports.
The country's government is interested in the company's return, and it will be managed by military aircraft.
Earlier, it became known that the airline planned to obtain lease agreements for Embraer 145 regional jets and to resume production of at least 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft by October 2023. Currently, the deal fell through and the flights will be carried out on Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737-300 military aircraft. These aircraft are currently being inspected so that they can be delivered to the airline.
It is noted that to maintain the license, the airline must own two aircraft. At this time, Mexicana should draw up "initial" routes that will be offered before the launch date of December 26, 2023.
As it has become known, Mexican government officials have promised cheap tickets to enable the airline to compete with other companies in Mexico.
It is not yet known what destinations Mexicana will serve and whether they want to add international service. If Mexicana has plans to become a carrier in the United States, it should offer many flights to the north after the Federal Aviation Administration restored Mexico's Category 1 safety rating.
