Naples Unveils Metro Line 6, Enhancing Urban Mobility
The City of Naples has officially inaugurated passenger service on Metro Line 6, utilizing Hitachi Rail's advanced digital signalling and rolling stock, as part of a 200 million EUR contract. This significant development marks a milestone in the city's public transportation network.
The newly opened Metro Line 6 spans approximately 6 kilometres, connecting eight stations throughout Naples, including four newly constructed ones. Initially, existing rolling stock will be used, with plans to introduce 22 new trains from Hitachi Rail starting in 2025.
This completion is a long-awaited event, with the project having faced numerous challenges and continuous upgrades over the past 40 years. The launch of Line 6 represents a major strategic achievement, providing an essential enhancement to Naples' infrastructure. It significantly increases the number of interchange points within the city's transport network, facilitating better connectivity between the western area and the city centre. In the near future, the line is also expected to extend to the airport, currently not connected by the metro system, marking a substantial improvement in urban mobility.
Hitachi Rail is manufacturing the new vehicles for Line 6 at its facilities in Naples and Pistoia. These state-of-the-art trains will feature advanced telecommunications, onboard digital signalling, and a smart air-conditioning system, ensuring a modern and efficient travel experience for passengers.
Additionally, the project includes the construction of a new railway depot for train maintenance and parking. Spanning an area of approximately 110,000 square metres, the depot will also house a new control room dedicated to managing the underground line.
