Air Canada has introduced updates to its ticketing system, drawing varied responses from customers. Beginning in January 2025, individuals purchasing the most affordable fares will incur additional costs for checking baggage and selecting seats. These updates apply to domestic flights across North America as well as to popular vacation spots in the south.

Under the updated guidelines, customers with the cheapest tickets will need to pay $35 for each bag that is too large to be considered a personal item. Only compact items, such as small backpacks or handbags that can fit under the seat, will be included for free. Certain items, like strollers and accessibility devices for passengers with mobility needs, are exempt from this rule.

Many travelers are unhappy with these adjustments, pointing out potential difficulties during shorter trips. For example, the inability to carry spare clothes could cause issues if checked baggage goes missing. However, some agree with the changes, believing they will limit the overuse of carry-on baggage privileges.

Revised Seat Selection Fees

Another notable modification involves seat selection. Travelers booking low-cost tickets will now be required to pay for choosing specific seating options in advance. The price will depend on the location of the seat, but advocates for passenger rights have labeled these costs as "unnecessary fees," arguing they do not reflect any additional expense for the airline.

Travel experts recommend skipping the seat selection fee, as airlines must ensure that families sit together, and adult passengers can often switch seats by mutual agreement. Canada’s Transport Minister has also voiced criticism of the new policies, emphasizing that passengers deserve fair service without unexpected fees.

How Air Canada Compares to Competitors

In its defense, Air Canada stated that these adjustments align with practices already adopted by other Canadian airlines. Still, questions remain about how these changes will influence customer satisfaction and brand loyalty. With growing competition, some passengers might opt for alternative carriers.

Preparing for the New Policies

For travelers, these changes necessitate more meticulous planning. Seasoned tourists suggest carefully packing essential items into a small bag to avoid extra fees and forgoing paid seat selection whenever feasible. Additionally, it’s important to know that compensation may be available in case of baggage loss, depending on airline policies and regulations.
