New Direct Route to Skopje Opens Up the Balkans for Travelers

Transavia has introduced direct flights to Skopje, marking its first connection to the North Macedonian capital. The airline is flying the route twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, approx 2 hours and 30 minutes flight time. The Airbus A321neo, the fuel efficient and passenger friendly aircraft, selected the main aircraft for this service, aligning with the airline’s commitment to modernizing its fleet.
The addition of Skopje to Transavia’s network expands travel options for passengers looking to explore Southeastern Europe. As North Macedonia’s largest city, Skopje is a blend of historical influences and contemporary urban development. The Vardar River divides the city into two contrasting districts—one showcasing Ottoman and Byzantine heritage, while the other features modern architecture and European-style public spaces, making it an appealing destination for travelers interested in both history and city life.
Direct flights just make it easier to get access to more obscure corners of Europe. Skopje's Old Bazaar — one of the oldest and biggest in the Balkans, offers a deep dive into the country’s cultural heritage. Other highlights include the historic Stone Bridge and the Kale Fortress, both of which provide insight into the city's past. Additionally, visitors can explore the legacy of Mother Teresa, who was born in Skopje, through a museum dedicated to her humanitarian work.
Outside the city, the new link facilitates travelers to visit some of North Macedonia´s natural potential. Matka Canyon situated just outside Skopje is commonly a kayaking place and hiking destinations, while Mavrovo National park has skiing and trekking opportunities. Those looking for a more relaxed experience can visit Lake Ohrid, known for its pristine waters and medieval churches, making it an ideal retreat for history and nature enthusiasts alike.
This route launch is a reflection of the rise in popularity for direct trips to otherwise hard-to-reach destinations. Increased connectivity to Skopje, gives travelers more freedom in experiencing the cultural color and natural beauty of North Macedonia. This expansion, not only makes the product more accessible but also indicates that the country is becoming a more appealing destination to leisure and business travelers across Europe.
