New EU Travel Systems Set to Streamline Entry and Enhance Security
ABTA has recently unveiled comprehensive guidance for members and travelers concerning the upcoming EU Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). These systems are poised to transform travel protocols into the EU, with full implementation expected by autumn 2024 for EES and mid-2025 for ETIAS.
EES will modernize entry procedures by replacing traditional passport stamping with an electronic system, aimed at increasing border efficiency and security within EU/Schengen countries. Concurrently, ETIAS will serve as a necessary travel authorization for non-EU visitors, streamlining entry processes and enhancing security measures.
In response to these significant changes, ABTA has launched a specialized hub within its Member Zone, offering exclusive content such as detailed Q&A documents to address member inquiries about the new systems. This initiative is part of ABTA's commitment to keeping travel professionals well-informed and prepared for the regulatory shifts.
Additionally, ABTA has developed an online consumer advice platform, continuously updated to provide travelers with the latest information on EES and ETIAS. The proactive release of these resources underscores ABTA's role as a trusted authority in travel, ensuring both members and consumers can navigate the upcoming changes with confidence.
Graeme Buck, ABTA’s Director of Communications, emphasized the importance of adaptation to these systems, acknowledging ongoing collaborations with EU departments and UK government bodies to facilitate smooth transitions for travelers and the travel industry alike.
These developments highlight the evolving nature of international travel and the increasing role of digital solutions in enhancing cross-border travel efficiency and security.
