The installation of foundations for a new footbridge at the relocated Hairmyres station has commenced, marking a significant development for travelers using Scotland's rail network.Network Rail, in collaboration with contractor AmcoGiffen, is set to carry out piling works from July 11 to 25 as part of the East Kilbride Enhancements project. Engineers will utilize a 58-tonne piling rig to drive 24 steel pile foundations to depths ranging from 2m to 5m. These foundations will support the new footbridge and lifts, providing step-free access to the two platforms.

The new Hairmyres station, situated approximately 600m west of its current location, will feature a double-tracked section between platforms to ensure timely train operations. This development is expected to significantly reduce delays, making travel more reliable and stress-free for passengers.

Paul Reilly, Network Rail’s senior programme manager for the station works, noted that the piling marks a critical step in the project's delivery, enabling the installation of an accessible footbridge at the new Hairmyres station. Once the foundations are in place, focus will shift to the construction of the lift towers, bridge deck, and the framework for the new station building.

When completed by summer 2025, Hairmyres station will offer a modern and accessible environment for passengers. The electrification of the East Kilbride to Glasgow line aims to encourage more people to switch from cars to rail, promoting a greener and more efficient travel option.

In addition to the work at Hairmyres, East Kilbride station saw its existing platform extended by 51m in May, facilitating the relocation of the buffer stop for new building construction. This extension is part of a broader £140 million Scottish Government investment to decarbonize passenger services across Scotland’s Railway.

Significant progress has also been made on other sections of the route. The rebuild of two bridges was completed in the spring, with work ongoing on two more bridges at Thornliebank Road and Westerton Lane near Busby station. Over 160 steel foundations have been installed along the track to support new overhead masts for power cables.

The East Kilbride Enhancement project is on track to be completed by December 2025, marking a significant step towards modernizing Scotland’s railway infrastructure. For travelers, this means a more reliable, accessible, and environmentally friendly travel experience. The project’s completion will enhance the overall quality of travel, making it a more attractive option for daily commutes and leisure trips alike.

The new Hairmyres station will significantly benefit travelers by offering state-of-the-art facilities and improved accessibility. Modern amenities such as digital information boards, comfortable waiting areas, and enhanced safety measures will be available. The introduction of step-free access with elevators and ramps will make it easier for passengers with disabilities, parents with strollers, and those with heavy luggage to navigate the station seamlessly.

Moreover, the improved punctuality and reliability of train services due to the double-tracked section between platforms will ensure that travelers can plan their journeys with greater confidence and ease. The station's strategic location and upgraded infrastructure will also support better connectivity, allowing travelers to reach their destinations more efficiently.
