New Gatwick Scanners Ease Airport Security for Travellers

London Gatwick Airport has completed the installation of new computed tomography (CT) scanners across both terminals, removing the need for passengers to take out laptops or place liquids in plastic bags during security screening. The reformulated system, put in place from Q1 2025, is one of a series of UK government solutions to modernize airport infrastructure with the latest imaging technology for improved safety and operational performance.
Cutting edge CT scanners provide high-resolution 3D images of cabin baggage that ensures more inspection priority for security personnel but does not disturb the packing arrangements of passengers. The efficiency of the system not only leads to better accuracy, but also cuts down queuing times on peak periods. With this update Gatwick joins other major UK airports that have moved towards a streamlined and less invasive screening model.
This shift offers tangible benefits for travellers. This is particularly valuable during peak travel seasons when security bottlenecks can lead to long delays. By ensuring that items are not necessarily resorted at checkpoints it makes the process less stressful, so family travelers or business travelers won't waste their time at the airport.
One of the other noteworthy changes is the scrapping of a ban on single use plastic bags for liquids to comply with a larger perspective of environmental goals. The new system allows liquids of up to 100 ml to remain in cabin baggage, making packing easier and reducing the reliance on plastic packaging. But travellers need to still look into the rules of their destination airports as not all the world over adapt to the same systems for smart boarding.
For those planning upcoming trips, this development marks a step toward more passenger-friendly air travel. It is a reflection of the broader industry moving towards convenience and safety integration. Although not all airports have jumped in, Gatwick’s embrace of the technology is a dedication to enhancing the all stages of travel through less tension and enhanced pre-flight procedures.
