New Low-Fare Flight Between Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. Proposed by Spirit Airlines
Spirit Airlines, in partnership with San José Mineta International Airport (SJC), announced plans to apply for approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to launch a new nonstop service between SJC and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). This application follows the recent Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2024, which authorized a limited number of new round-trip flights from DCA.
If approved, this new route would be the first nonstop, low-fare flight connecting Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C., enhancing travel options for Bay Area residents. The introduction of this service is expected to foster competition by adding a low-cost option and provide a more convenient travel choice for millions of Silicon Valley residents.
"Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C., have deep connections in the tech industry. This new nonstop flight would facilitate easier travel and encourage collaboration between these two key markets," said Matt Klein, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Spirit Airlines. "We have seen tremendous support from our San José passengers during our first year of service and are excited to pursue this new opportunity."
San José Mayor Matt Mahan highlighted the importance of this connection, noting that access to Silicon Valley is crucial for national leaders working on technology, AI, data privacy, and other significant issues. The new route would support these sectors by providing direct access to the capital of innovation.
Mookie Patel, SJC's Director of Aviation, expressed enthusiasm about the potential partnership with Spirit, emphasizing the unique benefits of combining SJC's convenience and reliability with Spirit's low fares. He noted that DCA serves as a vital gateway to federal decision-making and the thriving tech sector in the region.
Spirit Airlines, which began operations at SJC in June 2023, currently offers nonstop flights to Dallas-Fort Worth, Las Vegas, and San Diego. The airline is committed to enhancing the passenger experience.
