New Measures by First Bus to Ensure Ticket Compliance in Norfolk and Suffolk
From June 17, travelers using First Bus services in Norfolk and Suffolk will notice a new measure aimed at ensuring fare compliance. Revenue protection officers will be patrolling the network to verify that passengers are traveling with valid tickets and appropriate ID cards.
Fare evasion has been a significant issue, with adults frequently purchasing child tickets for half-price travel. Additionally, some passengers board without paying during busy times or use concessionary passes that do not belong to them.
Those found traveling without a valid ticket will be subject to a £50 penalty, with a 21-day window to pay or appeal the charge. Failure to comply within this timeframe will result in the fine doubling to £100, and persistent non-payment will lead to a County Court Summons.
Piers Marlow, Managing Director of First Bus East of England, explained that the revenue protection officers will serve a dual role: verifying tickets and assisting with customer inquiries. This initiative is designed to enhance the travel experience while allowing bus drivers to focus on passenger safety.
The officers will operate randomly on all routes throughout the day, so passengers are advised to always have a valid ticket ready. Equipped with body-worn cameras, these officers will only record interactions when necessary.
In cases where children are penalized, First Bus will notify the parent or guardian if the payment is not settled.
