New Packing Trend Could Get Holidaymakers Banned from Flights
Travelers flying are facing a new challenge due to a popular TikTok trend. This trend has resulted in some passengers being denied boarding, creating an unexpected travel headache.
Airports have strict rules about what can be packed and how much luggage travelers can bring. Recently, a TikTok trend called 'travel packing' has surged in popularity, with Google searches for the term increasing by 402 percent in the past month. This trend involves travelers finding creative ways to maximize their luggage space, a necessity as budget airlines continue to tighten baggage allowances.
The 'pillow hack' is one of the most talked-about methods on social media. This trick involves stuffing an empty pillowcase or neck pillow with extra clothes to avoid paying for additional baggage fees. While some users have successfully used this hack, recent incidents suggest it may not always work.
One TikTok user, @natashaorganic, shared a video showing the hack's potential pitfalls. The video, which has garnered 2.8 million views and nearly 300,000 likes, shows a passenger at Orlando International Airport being told they must pay for their pillowcase of clothes. When the passenger refused, airport staff denied them boarding and they were eventually escorted away by police.
This incident highlights the risks of trying to circumvent airline baggage rules. Travelers who attempt this hack may face unexpected costs or even miss their flights.
Kate Staniforth, head of marketing at Travel Republic, advises caution. "While many TikTok users claim this hack works, it's ultimately up to airline staff discretion. You could end up paying for additional luggage or leaving items behind. It's usually cheaper to pay for baggage in advance than to deal with last-minute charges at the airport."
The lesson for travelers is clear: while creative packing methods may seem appealing, they can backfire. To avoid complications, it’s best to adhere to airline regulations and consider pre-paying for extra baggage if needed.
